There is also another moment in the Haunted Mansion movie that I really want to highlight and (slight spoilers ahead) that is the moment where Bruce interrupts Ben’s mourning of Alyssa with his “think of the cholesterol on [your wife!]” Which triggers a massive fit of laughter in the entire room.
Yes! I was thinking the same thing when I saw that scene. And something else I’d like to add on is how the music, cinematography, etc. knew that this was what they were going for and kept with it. When Bruce delivers his quip there’s no record scratch or hard camera change or anything like that. The music stays somber. The framing is still done like an emotional shot. Because this is still part of the emotional scene. And the way Ben delivers the line “Thanks, Bruce. I really needed that.” shows that this isn’t just a humorous line done because the movie is scared to take itself too seriously but that it’s done because the movie knows to take all of itself seriously, even the humor. It shows that cheering up, moving on, and taking the time to laugh even in the hard times is part of grief, which I think is a major theme of the film.
This is present in all the other emotional scenes I can think of off the top of my head as well, such as the ghosts offering Ben and Gabbie eggs when they’re talking about Travis, or when Ben is talking to Travis about his dad and then he pulls out the Action Guy figure. These jokes aren’t played like punchlines that abruptly bring the emotional scenes to a halt and make you feel bad for connecting with the characters. Rather, they’re seamlessly strewn in together with the emotional scenes as part of the emotional moment, mixing the sadness with the laughter. And instead of punishing the viewer for daring to connect with the film, it rewards them for letting themselves be vulnerable because by letting yourself feel connected with the characters at their lowest, you can connect with them at their highest too. It’s just… ahhhh it’s so good. Marvel, please take some notes.
Sorry to all of the people who had to flee book Twitter because of Elon. I can simulate it for you right here though!
Author who wrote a YA book called something like “Crown of Suck and Bone”: I wish I could put my English teacher down with a bolt gun for making me read Shakespeare instead of REAL literature like Love Simon in high school
Former Ana Mardoll reply guy: This. LITERALLY this. Expecting people like me, who have synesthesia, to read Shakespeare is rooted in
Person whose profile pic is Dostoevsky w/ huge naturals: I hope the world blows up tomorrow
generational difference between people who learnt the word kin on tiktok and think it is a fun way of saying u identify somewhat with a character VS people who learnt the word kin on tumblr where people would threaten each other about kin lists because they genuinely believed they were a manifested reincarnation of karkat homestuck
genuinely people would have tiered lists of kins, from it’s okay to follow me if you kin this, to never interact w me if any of your mutuals are kin w this because this is literally me
people were kinblocking like it was the beaches of fucking normandy
BTW… PSA…. even if we arent mutuals if youre in my notes regularly theres a Very high chance i am still fond of you. yes im vaguing someones tags on the compliment the person u rbed this from post. but like. positive vaguing? THE POINT IS im weird abt following ppl but IM STILL SENDING U FOND VIBES…
